Lower Your Expectations, Not Your Standards

by | Oct 14, 2024

Expectations – A strong belief that something will happen or be the case.

Standards – a level of quality or attainment (a target or goal to maintain).

Often when pursuing a goal or fulfilling our ambitions we will set standards and expectations for ourselves for good reason. However, if we set our expectations too high we can run into problems that prevent us from achieving the standards we have chosen to pursue.

Removing standards is unwise as we need a target, goal or reference point to aim for to achieve success (however we have chosen to define it) and these standards are embedded in reality. To meet these standards we require feedback, reflection, practice and exposure.

When we don’t meet or exceed our expectations we are typically met with a range of negative emotions (anger, frustration, disappointment, shame to name a few). These emotions can sometimes compel us to act with an unclear mind or leave us ruminating and paralysed.

When we are in a negative emotional state, we are more likely to become defensive or dejected, our ability to reflect on our performance or processes is hindered, and we may avoid engaging with the practice or actions we need to improve and grow.

To avoid this chain of events we can lower our expectations (not necessarily to zero) to improve or facilitate our ability to meet high standards and difficult goals whilst enjoying the process. Centre your expectations around process, engagement and effort, NOT outcome. Place an expectation on yourself to show up, participate and put in a reasonable effort. Lowering your expectations liberates you to learn and grow.

Pursue Excellence, Expect Effort.
