An expansion on ‘Lower Your Expectations, Not Your Standards.’
Pursue Excellence, not Perfection.
First, we must define what excellence is for a given activity.
Next, we must define what effort looks like when pursuing that excellence. Effort could be showing up and participating. However, we made need to be more specific. Feeling 10% might look like just showing up, opening a book and reading a single page, organising the dishes that need to be cleaned or maybe even relaxing and resting so we can recover. Feeling 100% is where you might try and push your limits for a personal best, do a thorough deep clean of the oven or read an entire book in a day.
Define what effort looks like so you know what is reasonable to expect of yourself in any given moment or on any given day. The act of engaging is the gateway to further effort and if you consistently engage you will consistently take actions that will compound into excellence.
